Bhasma and Pishtee

Bhasma & Pishtee

In classical Ayurvedic preparation, “Bhasma” and “Pishti” are unique forms of medicinal substances, often derived from minerals and metals, and are highly valued for their therapeutic properties. Here’s a brief overview of each:

  1. Bhasma:
    • Bhasma refers to ash or calcined powder obtained from various minerals, metals, or natural substances.
    • The preparation of Bhasma involves a series of purification, detoxification, and calcination processes to eliminate impurities and make the substance safe for therapeutic use.
    • Bhasmas are known for their potent and concentrated therapeutic effects and are often used in Ayurvedic medicines to treat a wide range of health conditions.
    • They are typically administered in small quantities, mixed with other herbal or natural ingredients, and are believed to have a rejuvenating and healing effect on the body.
  2. Pishti:
    • Pishti is a form of Ayurvedic medicine that involves triturating or grinding specific minerals or substances with a liquid, often rose water, until a fine, smooth paste is obtained.
    • The most well-known Pishti is Mukta Pishti, made from processed pearl or pearl oyster shell, and is highly regarded for its cooling and calming properties.
    • Pishtis are commonly used in Ayurvedic treatments for conditions related to excessive heat, inflammation, and imbalances in the body.
    • They are generally gentle on the digestive system and are suitable for a variety of health concerns, particularly those related to Pitta dosha imbalances.

Both Bhasma and Pishti preparations are integral to classical Ayurvedic medicine, offering unique and potent therapeutic options for addressing a wide array of health issues. The careful and precise processing of these substances ensures their safety and efficacy in Ayurvedic treatments.
